Resources

I think it would be good to agree upon some resources. How many resources do we want to have? 3, 5, more? What kinds of resources should there be? Are they limited in supply? Do they regenerate over time? If so, how long? Also, which resources are necessary for which units?

Yeah,
I was thinking 3 resources.
A fairly common substance for power and energy like things.
Hydrogen?
A metal substance for the building of tanks and buildings.
Steelszz?
And finally a agriculture method for the infantry and research thereof.
Agro? Aggri?

I agree with Hydrogen.
I think we should perhaps have titanium or Aluminum instead of or in addition to steel, but steel is also good.
Finally, I thing Oil is a MUST.

By 200 years in the future the oil reserves of the world will be depleted.

True, I suppose. And I guess Hyrdogen would serve the same purpose. What did you think about the metal?

Won't be a problem.
The name of the metal doesn't bother me.
As long as we don't just call it meta, or unobtanium or something like that.

The metal: Supremium
The Fuel: Plasma
The Food: Soilent Green

So our three resources are:
Titanium: For constructing vechicles, buildings, etc.
Hydrogen: A fuel source for vehicles, etc.
Supplies: This represents textiles, food, money, etc. It's used in most everything, particularly Infantry.

Okay now to be serious, I think that we need around 2-3 resources. Any more would be too much to worry about and any less would be Command and Conquer. Also we can't use oil, too un-imaginative.

I agree with Hydrogen should be the fuel. but why would we use Titanium?

Supplies is a good idea, but as I was thinking of how to harvest supplies I thought that we could build a supply warehouse as a building to manufacture suppies over time.

So, I would like to bring up the issue of whether or not the resources would be renewable. Would there be a limited amount of supplies, or would they regenerate over time? I don't think, based upon the nature of the game, that they should be permanent and unlimited (at least not from one source).

not a bad idea, but wouldn't the supply warehouse take up money for it to work?

It would cost something to build it, but I don't know if we would charge to create supplies or if that would just be counter productive.

Maybe not a factory, for supplies; factories would speed up production, but I think that the supplies are gathered by supply areas, near resources on the ground. Think like farms in civilization.
If there is fertile land near your base, put a farm or supply gathering type unit there.

It sounds like supplies will not be a harvestable resource. Instead, each Supply Depot you build will provide, say "100" supplies. This goes into a Supply Pool. Certain things, primarily units, would have "supply costs." That is, they take up a certain number of supply points from the supply pool. Therefore, the more supply depots you build, the more infantry, tanks, etc., you can build. I do not know what would then be our third resource. At least we have Hydrogen and Titanium (Metal).

Would these farms ever run out? also what about the age of empires style farms where you build a farm and when it's done you build another.

As for our third resource...
I don't really have any blistering Ideas right now.
We could do a percent thing, like from SupCom. Rob could describe it better. Just for our supplies, to basically limit the intense superbuilding of units.

So the three resources are:
Hydrogen: Hydrogen is harvested by building Hydrogen Farms, which supply Hydrogen at a set rate (perhaps 100 every 6 seconds per farm, etc.).
Titanium: Worker Units harvest titanium from titanium deposits.
Funds: Funds are collected by harvesting valuable resources (minerals) from mines then take them back to the central hub to exchange them for funds.
Supples: Not a collectible resource. Supplies represent a pool from which units in the field draw. All units have a supply cost (with more amazing units having a higher supply cost to maintain). This will require the player to make a decision between mass amounts of cannon fodder or few juggernauts. Building supply depots increases your supplies.
